This week we will be featuring Grey Spinel and Morganite!
The ever-elegant spinel is a breathtaking and versatile stone. It typically comes in two unforgettable colors–a refined blueish grey and a bright pinkish red.
In ancient times, southeast Asia’s mines yielded exceptional large spinel crystals, which became the treasured property of kings and emperors, often passing through many hands as spoils of war.
Red spinel has been mistaken for ruby throughout centuries. It has been titled as the ‘great imposter’ as it sat atop the British crown masquerading as a ruby, now known as the Black Prince’s Ruby. However, in recent years, the colored stone world has seen a growing demand for stones in nontraditional colors. Grey Spinel has been quickly growing in popularity, especially as one of this year’s Pantone colors being ‘Ultimate Grey’.
Most grey spinel has a minor blue or violet secondary color component. It is relatively rare to find a spinel with a perfectly neutral gray color. Sources of Grey Spinel include Burma, Tanzania and Sri Lanka. Spinel is a durable gemstone with a hardness of 8 on the Mohs Scale and can easily be used in all types of jewelry.
Now that we’ve learned a bit about our incredible spinel, let’s put a ring together in one extraordinary legacy piece.
- Center – Grey Spinel from Sri Lanka, 2.46ct., 9×7.6x5mm
